Ear Surgery in New Jersey
If you are self-conscious about your ears, or if your son or daughter has been teased at school because of large or protruding ears, surgical options are available to provide relief. Surgery of the ear, also known as otoplasty, is a procedure that helps reduce protrusion of the ear away from the head. For most New Jersey patients, ear surgery is a straightforward procedure that involves a quick recovery and minimal discomfort.
Ear surgery is commonly performed on children between the ages of four to fourteen, but is not limited to children and may also be performed on older patients. Cosmetic procedures are available for those individuals with large ears and for those with congenital (birth) irregularities that detract from their appearance. Additionally, an individual's ears may exhibit abnormal traits due to their genetic make-up or an accidental injury, such as losing an ear or part of an ear. Otoplasty can be used successfully for each of these situations.

Reasons for Considering Ear Surgery in New Jersey
Patients come to Dr. Sorokin for otoplasty for many reasons, including to:
- Bring proportion to the face if the ears "stick out" too much
- Correct folded ear tips (also known as lop ear)
- Reshape long or offset earlobes
- Enhance very small ears or other congenital defects
- Remedy an accidental injury, including the loss of an ear
The Ear Surgery Procedure
Otoplasty is ordinarily performed under general anesthesia for children and local anesthesia for adults by a trained cosmetic surgeon. New Jersey and Philadelphia patients seek a variety of surgical solutions for their ears. In the most common procedure during which the ear is brought closer to the head, Dr. Sorokin begins by making an incision hidden in the crease behind the ear. This incision allows the cartilage located behind the ears to be reshaped in order to position the ear closer to the head. The procedure takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of surgery.
There are various surgical techniques involved in correcting irregularities other than protruding ears, such as extended earlobes or missing parts of the ear. Dr. Sorokin is happy to discuss these techniques with you during the initial consultation.
Recovery Following Ear Surgery in New Jersey
You should expect some swelling and discoloration of the ear after the procedure. Any discomfort or tenderness almost always responds successfully to over-the-counter medication. After the surgery is completed, Dr. Sorokin will place a turban-like bandage around the patient's head, which generally will need to be worn for two to five days. The bandage secures the ear in place and assists with the healing process. Once the bandage is removed, the patient will need to wear a headband during sleep for about two weeks. Dr. Sorokin discourages strenuous exercise until the surgical area mostly has healed, which may be several weeks. Complications are extremely rare, but patients should be careful to follow the instructions that Dr. Sorokin provides to minimize their risks.
Relying on his training and experience performing ear plastic surgery, New Jersey cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sorokin is able to reposition or reshape unattractive or awkward ears.
