You know the feeling all too well: the sense that your breasts are getting in the way of the activities you'd like to do or causing an unwelcome focus away from your other physical and intellectual attributes. In addition, the pain and discomfort that comes from exercise may cause you to avoid physical activity, while shapeless clothes may cause you to shy away from social settings. In short, you are like many of the Philadelphia and New Jersey breast reduction patients Dr. Sorokin sees—you've been dealing with the problems that large breasts cause long enough and you're looking for a solution that will give you freedom from discomfort and distraction.

Breast reduction (or reduction mammoplasty) is an enhancement procedure that reshapes your breasts in order to make them smaller, lighter, and firmer. Reduction is accomplished by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin. Women who opt for breast reduction see some of the most dramatic results of any plastic surgery patients. In addition to enjoying a beautiful, more proportionate appearance, you will be relieved to learn that a healthier, more comfortable life awaits.

If you have questions, call 856-797-0202 to schedule an appointment to discuss breast reduction with New Jersey cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sorokin, a board-certified plastic surgery specialist at Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery. The office is just a short drive from many towns, including Mt. Laurel, Cherry Hill, Medford, and Berlin, New Jersey. Breast reduction surgery offers many women a more balanced appearance and a reprieve from discomfort. Set up an appointment with Dr. Sorokin today.

Reasons for Considering a Breast Reduction

Many women in the Tri-State area with larger breasts find that breast reduction surgery in New Jersey offers them an opportunity to dramatically alter their appearance and relieve emotional anxiety. The procedure can result in a remarkable transformation for women whose large breasts cause:

  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain
  • Premature sagging
  • Disproportionate or "top heavy" body shape
  • Restriction of physical activity
  • Painful bra strap marks and/or rashes

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Dr. Sorokin begins most breast reduction surgeries for New Jersey and Philadelphia patients with an incision that circles the areola. From the areola, the incision goes down and follows the natural curve under the breast. Next, Dr. Sorokin removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin before he repositions the nipple and areola to a location higher on the breast. During the initial consultation, together with Dr. Sorokin you will be able to choose a procedure that is most appropriate for your breast shape and desired size.

Unlike many New Jersey cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Sorokin understands the importance of discussing your surgical options and objectives before the procedure so that he can work with you to select a surgical method that will give you the breast size, position, and shape you're looking for. Of all plastic surgery procedures, breast reduction often results in the quickest changes to body image and emotional well-being. Patients are often overwhelmed by the elimination of physical pain and excited to have a better proportioned body, an enhanced appearance, and better fitting clothes.

Recovery Following Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Sorokin will instruct you to get plenty of rest and limit your movement for several days after surgery in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. Bandages are applied immediately following your procedure to aid the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts. Once Dr. Sorokin removes the bandages, you will be fitted with a specialized surgical bra that will need to be worn around the clock for several weeks.

Recover in Comfort

Although most patients return to their daily activities in a few days, your breasts may still ache occasionally for up to a month. Most swelling and bruising will subside in the first few weeks, but it may be six months to a year before your breasts settle into their new shape, and even then their shape may change in response to hormonal shifts, weight changes, or pregnancy.

Your breasts may swell and become tender during the first menstrual period after surgery. Altered sensations of the breast skin and nipple are common symptoms following the procedure. Some women may experience numbness, while others may experience hypersensitivity. In some cases, these altered sensations may be permanent.

Stitches generally will be removed in one to three weeks. Many patients are concerned about scarring following breast reduction surgery. Dr. Sorokin will place incisions so that scarring is as inconspicuous as possible, but scars may remain lumpy and red for several months before gradually becoming less obvious.

Through his extensive training and experience performing breast reductions, New Jersey cosmetic surgeon Dr. Sorokin is able to offer you a refined look, relief from chronic pain, and a fresh perspective on life.
