Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation
You know that you're unhappy with the appearance of your breasts. But you may not know which plastic surgery options will give you the improvements you want. It's common to be confused about the difference between breast lift and breast augmentation. New Jersey and Philadelphia residents are often unaware that each procedure offers a distinct way to enhance breast appearance.

Basic Differences
On a very basic level, a breast lift raises and reshapes sagging breasts, while breast augmentation increases their size and volume. If you are looking to elevate drooping breasts or nipples without altering the current size of your breast, a lift by itself may meet your goals. However, if you seek fuller, firmer breasts, Dr. Sorokin may recommend a combination of the procedures. Placing an implant into a sagging breast will only cause the breast to sag further over time-the solution is to rejuvenate the entire breast area by combining lift and augmentation.
Each procedure involves a distinct surgical technique as well. During a lift, Dr. Sorokin moves the nipple and areola to a higher position on the breast, removes excess skin, and closes the remaining skin underneath the breast to tighten and lift the breast. During augmentation surgery, Dr. Sorokin places an implant in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall. When combined, the procedures can offer a dramatically younger and more shapely breast appearance, while minimizing scarring and recovery time through the use of a single surgical session.
Which Procedure is Right for You?
To determine which surgical options are right for you, there are a number of questions to answer at your initial consultation with Dr. Sorokin, including:
- Are you currently satisfied with the size of your breasts?
- Do you feel that they sag or droop more than you would like?
- Are you happy with the position of the nipple on each breast?
- Do you have excess skin and lost volume from pregnancy or weight loss?
These and other questions will help Dr. Sorokin to gain insights into your goals and needs.
In addition, a physical examination during the consultation allows Dr. Sorokin to determine what type of surgery is best for you. When viewing the breast from the side, if the nipple hangs below the breast crease, he usually will recommend a breast lift; but, if the nipple sits above the breast crease, he will often recommend just breast implants for Philadelphia and New Jersey women. Some women whose nipple sits at the breast crease will be good candidates for either procedure. Dr. Sorokin also will evaluate the condition of your skin and the overall shape of your breasts when making a surgical recommendation.
